About Brisbane State High School

Brisbane State High School (BSHS) is one of Australia's most iconic and prestigious state high schools, established in 1918. Located in South Brisbane, it has a proud history of academic excellence, producing graduates who go on to lead in their fields.

Academic Selective Entry into BSHS is limited and heavily oversubscribed each year. Students are selected on the basis of an order of merit from the Academic Selective Entry Test. Our focus is on Year 5 students applying for Year 7 entry in 2028.

The HAST-P Entrance Test

The Higher Ability Selection Test – Primary (HAST-P), developed by ACER, is used for Year 5 applicants. It covers three core areas:

Reading Comprehension

35 min

Mathematics Reasoning

35 min

Written Expression

30 min

Test Preparation Advice from BSHS: "We believe the best test preparation is to be actively engaged in the current learning at Primary School." Past test papers are not available. A good night's sleep before the test is also recommended.

Application Checklist

What Year 5 Students Need to Submit

  • Complete the Selective Entry Online Application Form
  • Submit Year 4 school reports (both semesters)
  • Submit Year 5 Semester 1 report (when available) via email
  • Submit Year 5 NAPLAN report (when available) via email
  • Provide Photo Identification Form on test day
  • Sit the Academic Selective Entry Test (HAST-P)
  • Demonstrate academic excellence and good behaviour throughout Year 5 & 6
  • Attend an enrolment interview with school Leadership Team
